Learning About St. Valentine

Happy St. Valentine’s Day!

It is a fun day for us.  We have a tradition of making heart-shaped cut-out cookies for this day, and giving Valentine’s cards and treats out to all of our neighborhood friends.  We also read a book about St. Valentine (listed below).  Otherwise, it’s a school-day as usual.  Here are some pictures from the past!

This book contains beautiful mosaic illustrations.  I wish the book hadn’t suggested that St. Valentine’s priesthood was one of secrecy, and I wish it emphasized instead the tradition that St. Valentine married Christians even though the emperor had forbade it.  It was for his defense of the right to marriage and his martyrdom that the priest Valentine was remembered.
